about

Uni (うに) in Japanese pronounced as ‘oo-nii’ literally means sea urchins. This blog, however, is not named after a particular type of mysterious sea creature or a delicate seafood dish. Uni is a nickname for a girl who lives in a small town in Hokkaido. I got to talk to her through a language learning app - a platform where people can talk anonymously with strangers for language exchange purpose. Once, I had a quiet and calm conversation with Uni during winter, talking about how we felt stuck in our rooms with nothing to be excited for. She talked about the things she always wanted to do but often was let down by the responsibilities she had to carry and the expectations of people around her. This blog is named after her as a reminder of my deepest longing to freely choose the way to live happily.
