The world is in panic right now. The coronavirus has shaken everything, and most countries have imposed lockdowns. Japan hasn’t allowed tourists to enter at this point, but people within the country are still mostly free to move around. It felt strange to see such a famous UNESCO World Heritage site so quiet and uncrowded. Shirakawa-Go has always been on my travel list for ages, but I used to hesitate going because of the large crowds 1. Now, seeing how magical and beautiful this place is, I don’t mind visiting again a few more times - no matter how busy it gets. Maybe Shirakawa-Go in winter next time.
